International Geophysics Series, Volume 2: Physics of the Aurora and Airglow explores certain physical aspects of aurora and airglow. This volume is composed of 13 chapters and begins with surveys of the theory and spectroscopic and photometric analyses of radiation from the upper atmosphere. Not quite an aurora (we do actually get those too on occasion) but interesting none the less. Another aspect of the airglow that is seldom discussed is .
This work had its origins in writing his book, “PAA” (Physics of the Aurora and Airglow ), in which he was attempting to give the theory for an observed polarization of the Na “D” emission in twilight. The standard reference was the text by Mitchell and Zemansky, which was based on Van Vleck’s treatment with the old quantum. An aurora is a glow in the ionosphere of a planet or a moon caused by the interaction between the object's magnetic field and charged particles from the Sun; "aurora" is Latin for "dawn." Aurorae have been observed on Earth, Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury, and Uranus, and are expected to occur in some form on all worlds that have magnetospheres.
The mysterious lights in the northern sky seems to be aurora or northern lights but their appearance is more similar to airglow. Which one is the source of these green bands? Atmospheric gravity waves - propagating upward into Earth’s mesopause - disturb the homogeneous green airglow layer (90 – km), causing stripes and bands that can. The aurora are very structured (due to the Earth’s magnetic field); whereas airglow is generally quite uniform. The extent of the aurora is affected by the strength of the solar wind; whereas Author: Nathan Case.

Published by the American Geophysical Union as part of the Special Publications Series. Physics of the aurora and airglow is a diversified subject, and this characteristic is, I think, the secret of its charm.
But it Aurorae and airglow book growing up in an age when physicists must necessarily specialize in narrow fields of interest.

Airglow is the natural “glowing” of the Earth’s atmosphere. It happens all the time and across the whole globe. There are three types of airglow: dayglow, twilightglow and nightglow.

Have you ever wondered why the background night night sky isn’t pitch black at night, much like in space? Here are all the answers to unravel a strange and mind-boggling phenomenon!
